"In Progress" - Robin Renee
  reviewed by Scott Free

Pop sensibilities abound with the debut CD from Robin Renee entitled "In Progress". It's an interesting title for a debut - as if Robin's not quite confident yet in her own abilities. But she shows real promise as a songwriter - while her verses are somewhat lacking in structure, she understands completely the power of the strong hook chorus, as in the hard rock "Silent Partner". And "Butterfly Jar" is just a beautiful song, period. Harmonies flow though pop treats like "For Today" and "Lyin' All The Time". Her voice comes across somewhat shy at times, but it seems to have been recorded up very close to the microphone - there's a personal side that comes through quite effectively.

What makes the CD so fun to listen to ,though, is the way Robin designed the production to take you back - this is firmly grounded in '60's and 70's pop - and refreshingly so. Think Fleetwood Mac, the Turtles, Steely Dan.. it takes you right down memory lane.....

"Salt Lake Mirror" - I'm in the back of my parents stationwagon on a skiing trip to upper Michigan asking them to please turn up the radio (Mom does if for me, but Dad turns it back down).

"Pennies and Perfume" - I'm in the "converted basement" bedroom of my best friend from high school marching band doing bongs and drinking not very cold Old Style beer out of cans (with the blacklight on, of course).

"I Could Love You" - (ok, this one I have to go way back - we're talking Herman's Hermits here) I'm in my pajamas playing "radio" with my sister in our respective bedrooms - I put the record player speakers by the heating vent and play DJ as she listens in her room.

If Robin Renee's work is "in progress", I look forward to what the future holds.
